Welcome to the historical summer capital of India – since the British era! The Nepalis fondly referred to the Gurkha has been a part of the British army because of which they had created a separate regimen for them, known as the Gurkha regiment. Likewise, there is a gateway in Simla which has been named after the Gurkha, which is called as the Gurkha Gate. This gate is located just 1.5 km from the Shimla railway station on the Chaura Maidan Road and is believed to be one of the oldest gateways in Shimla. It was constructed as a tribute to the Gurkha soldiers who extended an unconditional sustenance to the British government for protection of the Himalayan region.
The gate was constructed as ordered by Lady Curzon, the then Viceroy of India. She was so impressed by their valour that she decided to dedicate the whole place for them. In fact, the gateway served as the home of the Viceroy of India during the British rule. The place has now been converted to Indian Institute of Advanced Study. The gateway building used to have wooden Dhajji houses that were primarily built for the soldiers. One can understand the story behind the construction by a careful view of the carvings on this magnificent gate.
