Built around the 5th century BC, the Pashupatinath is a temple complex dedicated to Lord Shiva. There are several stories as to the origins of Pashupatinath. According to legend, Shiva and Parvati once came down from their heavenly abode to tour the realm of mortals. On their journey, they rested awhile on the banks of river Bagmati, in the Kathmandu Valley. Here, they were so enamoured with the beauty of the valley that they decided to stay on a while as deers. Finally, the gods, anxious due to Shiva's long absence, caught up with him and broke his horns forcing him to resume his divine form. The broken horn remained buried in the soil. It was found several years later by an astonished shepherd who found his cows showering the place with milk. Following this, a temple was erected on the site of the divine *linga* and soon many more temples sprang up in the complex. There are many variations of these legends but most of them revolve around the tale of Shiva turning into an animal. Hence, the temple is named Pashupatinath - the God of all beings, animate and inanimate. No wonder this is the holiest site in Nepal. It is said that praying to the *linga* of this temple makes all wishes come true. From 9 to 11 am, *Abhishek* of the Shivalinga takes place, whose ticket costs around 1100INR. You can visit the temple premises for worship anytime from 9:30 to 1:30 am. However, without a doubt, the greatest attraction of Pashupatinath is its Aarti. Hymns. Classical instruments. Vedic mantras. Bells. Incense. Fire. The atmosphere so so spellbinding that it makes one feel like they are part of something much larger than themselves. This Aarti is conducted every day at around 6 pm. But make sure you are present beforehand to soak in the preparations and the unraveling spectacle from comfortable positions. Another highlight of Pashupatinath involves its myriad festivals. Taking place in the months of February - March, the *Mahashivratri* festivals is a major festival celebrated at the temple. The words *Mahashivratri* literally mean the night of the great Lord Shiva. It draws the biggest crowds to Pashupatinath, who come in to soak in its spellbinding spiritual atmosphere.
