When you are travelling to North India, particularly Delhi, paying a visit to the Taj Mahal is mandatory. While Taj Mahal stands there in all its glory, enchanting all its beholders, on the northern part of the monument lies a garden that is loaded with tons of historical memories – Mehtab Bagh. 'Mehtab' means 'moonlight', so the name of the garden translates as 'The Moonlight Garden'.
If you wish to have the best view of Taj Mahal, you have to visit Mehtab Bagh. This is located on the north side of Taj Mahal, spreading across a huge square area covered in lush greenery. There is a beautiful fountain located near the front gate, from where you can get a magnetic view of Taj Mahal. Mehtab Bagh perfectly adorns the bank of the Yamuna with its serenity. If you are visiting the Taj, you simply cannot afford to miss the splendid sunset at Mehtab Bagh. This place is extremely popular among tourists for its natural beauty and ecstatic view.
The place holds a deep historical significance. The Mughal Emperor Babur created this garden in the sixteenth century, along with ten other ones. Mehtab Bagh was the last to be built. This testifies the fact that the garden is much older than the Taj. We also find a mention of Mehtab Bagh in a letter written by Aurangzeb. Some people associate the myth of Black Taj Mahal with this garden, however, there is no conclusive evidence to support this claim. The garden was almost destroyed by frequent floods and other factors. In the 1990s, initiatives were taken to restore the garden to its previous glory. According to the planning of the Archaeological Survey of India, the entire garden got a makeover. They planted multiple species of trees to keep it similar to its Mughal origin. Now if you take a walk across the garden, you will notice a wide variety of trees, shrubs and blooming flowers beautifying the garden. They look sparkling during sunset or in the moonlight.
One of the central attractions of the garden is a large pond located in the southern part of the garden. Reflection of the Taj on this octagon-shaped pond looks majestic, and the fountain at the entrance adds to the charm of the garden. Here you can click as many aesthetic photographs as you can, with the most amazing view. The place remains open all days, from 6 am to 6 pm.
You can easily find convenient modes of transport to reach this location from anywhere in Agra. You have to get a ticket from the front gate to enter the garden. The best time to visit Mehtab Bagh is during sunset, preferably in winter. You can enjoy walking around this serene land full of greenery, and can also have a picnic there! This historical Mughal garden is also a favourite among photography enthusiasts, as it offers an amazing view of one of the seven wonders of the world.
