Amarnath temple or the Amarnath cave is located in Jammu and Kashmir. The cave is about 141 km from Srinagar. This temple forms an important part of the Hindu people and is considered to be the one of the holiest temples in Hinduism. The cave is being surrounded with snow filled mountains and the cave is also being covered with snow almost all the year except during the summer period of time. The cave is of 40 meters in height. The stalagmite which is formed due to the freezing of water drops which naturally falls from the roof of the cave to the floor grows up vertically from the floor and is considered to be the Shiva Linga by the Hindu people. It is also being mentioned in the ancient Hindu writings of Mahabharata and Puranas that Lingam represents the Lord Shiva. According to the Hindu legend, this cave is said to be the cave where Lord Shiva explained the secret of life and eternity to his divine consort, Parvati.
