Description

Pondicherry, the French capital of India, has been listed as one of the most sought after destinations by Airbnb users for 2019. Have you heard about the city? If not, discover now all the attractions of this place that brings together Hindu temples, parks, colonial buildings and a spiritual vibe that gives you that good feeling of belonging and having returned home.

Situated on the south coast of India, about three hours by train from Chennai, Pondicherry is a small city - by the standards of the country - that has natural attractions, such as beaches, cultural, such as museums and monuments, and religious, such as temples, churches and mosques.

Auroville

An experimental municipality a few kilometres from Pondicherry, Auroville stands out as the coveted City of Dawn and is an international city. A modern environment but immersed in the ideals of spirituality and the many virtues of humanity, Auroville is the place to discover its essence and pure being.

Auroville is also known for a very prominent building that spans the entire viewing range with its monumental size. Called Matrimandir, this vast golden globe-shaped structure is a centre of meditation and built as the soul of the city of Auroville. Overflowing with the ideals that make Auroville such a revered city of peace, access to the Matrimandir is strictly supervised by the authorities, as the architectural landmark is not considered a tourist site despite its tremendous impact on public curiosity.

French War Memorial

In remembrance of the brave soldiers, French War Memorial was built in 1971. Built on Goubert Avenue for the soldiers who lost their lives during the First World War fought in 1916 till 1919. Apart from remembering the soldiers, this memorial conveys one more message that war left us with fatalities and nothing else. Try to visit this place during Bastille Day celebrated on July 14. You’ll get to see the glory of this place as the memorial illuminated beautifully. Don’t forget to see the Gandhi Statue during your walking tour.

Gandhi statue

Gandhi Statue will remind of being in India and not in France. The statue is in the memory of Mahatma Gandhi nearby the French War Memorial. Gandhi Statue, surrounded by eight monolithic pillars, makes it more beautiful. The monument seems quite striking when you’ll view it from far.

Old lighthouse

The old lighthouse, built in the 19th century is one of the best places to see in Pondicherry. It is a famous historical landmark, and it also served as the guiding light. The ships used to cross the ocean with the help of light from the lighthouse. But now it remains just the reminder of the architecture and engineering of those days. It is famous among the tourists because of its picturesque view.

Gingee Fort

Gingee Fort in 1921 was declared a National Monument, and it is one of the beautiful places to see in Pondicherry. The architecture of the Gingee Fort is gorgeous and unique. You should not miss this fort on your tour to Pondicherry.
